2014 Scion IQ Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
There's a CrossFit gym near Ramona Country Estates, and I got a call from a guy who'd been fighting his 2014 Scion IQ ignition for a few weeks. Not a dead key, not a lost key.
Just a lock that was getting harder and harder to turn. Some mornings it went fine. Other mornings he was sitting in the parking lot working it back and forth for five minutes before it caught.
The dealer had already looked at it. Their answer was a full ignition assembly swap, new keys, full reprogram. He was close to booking it when a friend pointed him toward me.
When I got to him, I checked the cylinder first. The issue wasn't a failed lock. It was worn internal wafers, the small spring-loaded pieces inside the cylinder that read your key's cuts. They wear down over years of daily use, and when they go soft, the key starts slipping instead of seating clean. Some days it works. Some days it doesn't. Classic worn wafer pattern.
I backed up the immobilizer data before touching anything mechanical, decoded the existing lock, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh replacement key to match. Then I synced the remote head key function through the OBD port. I laid the old wafers out on the hood so he could actually see the wear. That part matters. People feel better when they can see what was wrong.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted, and he didn't pay for parts he didn't need. The ignition turns clean now.
