BRZ Key Tech, Generation by Generation
1st Gen (ZC6)
Straightforward OBD-II job. The 1st gen BRZ runs a 4-button remote head key carrying a Subaru G chip (Texas 4D-60, 80-bit transponder) and a high-security TR47 blade. We plug into the diagnostic port, generate and write the chip, cut the blade on our mobile machine, and the car fires up. No push-button start on most trims, just a turn-key ignition backed by a modern immobilizer.
1st Gen Facelift (ZC6)
Same G chip transponder and HYQ12BBY fob as the earlier ZC6, but Subaru added push-button start on higher trims. OBD-II programming still works, the 4-button remote head key still uses a CR2016, and the TR47 blade is unchanged. The wrinkle: some trims now have keyless access, so we verify your exact build by VIN before rolling out to your San Diego address.
2nd Gen (ZD8)
Security tightened noticeably here. Subaru moved to a 3-button smart proximity key with enhanced immobilizer protection and online server authentication during programming. CR2032 battery, push-button start standard. Most of these we still finish on-site, but the server-auth step adds time versus the older ZC6 cars.
2nd Gen tS (STI-tuned)
The tS stacks extra security on top of the already tightened 2nd gen system. The hardware is identical (3-button smart key, CR2032), but programming demands dealer-level server access. We tell you upfront before we drive anywhere. If your tS needs a key, dial (619) 876-1271 and we will lay out your real options honestly.
Which BRZ Key Do You Have?
Classic key with the remote buttons fused into the head. The TR47 blade slides into the ignition cylinder to start the car, and the G chip inside chats with the immobilizer every time you turn it.
Physically the same key as the earlier ZC6, but on higher trims the car now reads it as a proximity fob too. The emergency blade still saves you if the CR2016 dies on the I-15 commute home.
Slim 3-button fob that lives in your pocket. Walk up to the BRZ, grab the door handle, hit the start button, you are gone. A hidden TR47 emergency blade pops out of the fob body when the CR2032 finally quits.
Same physical fob as the standard ZD8, but the STI-tuned tS rides on additional immobilizer security that needs dealer-level programming credentials.

BRZ Key Problems We See Most in San Diego
Remote Head Key Blade Wear
Customers blame the chip when the culprit is a chewed-up blade. The TR47 high-security cut on 2013-2021 BRZs wears from daily ignition use, and cylinder wafers stop reading cleanly. Marco checks the blade first; a fresh cut with the G chip profile fixes it.
G-Chip Cloning Failures
When a San Diego customer says another shop "couldn't get the key working," ask if they tried to clone the G chip. The Texas 4D-60 80-bit chip in 2013-2020 BRZ doesn't clone with aftermarket tools; needs OBD-II. Autel IM608 with Subaru protocols every call.
Battery Drain from Fob
San Diego sun bakes the CR2016 in your 2013-2020 BRZ fob faster than expected. A pressed panic button or a fob baking in a closed cabin off Mission Bay kills it in weeks. Swap: face down, pry seam with a coin, fresh CR2016 positive-up. Still dead? Call us.
Smart Key Antenna Failure
Your 2022-2025 BRZ refuses to detect the smart key even though the CR2032 reads fresh. Looks like a dead fob, but the proximity antenna in the car is the culprit. Needs ECU-level diagnostics. We test on-site in Mira Mesa before you spend on parts.
Can You Self-Program a BRZ Key?
Zero DIY path. The 2013-2021 BRZ demands professional OBD-II programming hardware running Subaru-specific protocols. Nothing you can do from the front seat will teach this car a new key.
Possible, but narrow. With at least one working key in hand, you can pair a fresh remote to a 2023-2025 BRZ using an OBD-II programmer plus a compatible app. This only registers the remote functions. The transponder chip is not touched, and if all keys are lost you are out of DIY territory.

Worth Knowing
Detail almost no BRZ owner knows: the 1st gen BRZ ZC6 fob and the Toyota GT86 fob are dead-identical down to the HYQ12BBY FCC ID. Subaru and Toyota co-developed the chassis on a single platform and never bothered differentiating the key system. One key, two badges on the front. Cross-shop the aftermarket pool and a Toyota-branded shell pairs to the BRZ without a single line of code changing.
