2025 Subaru BRZ
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2025 Subaru BRZ Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy out in Santaluz on a Sunday afternoon. He'd driven his 2025 Subaru BRZ down to do some paddling and somewhere between loading up and getting back to the car, his only smart key was gone.

He retraced everything. Checked the water, checked the lot, nothing. The BRZ was sitting there locked, and he had one bar of phone battery left when he reached me.

He figured it was a tow-and-wait situation. Dealer on a Sunday, then Monday morning at the earliest, and that's before anyone even starts the job. I told him I could be there that afternoon.

I came out to him. The first thing is getting in without the key present, so I worked the door mechanically. Once inside, I connected through the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost sequence. That process clears every previously registered fob from the system so nothing missing can ever be used to start the car again. Then it learns the new smart key as the registered unit. I cut the emergency insert blade to match the lock, assembled the fob, and ran through every function before I called it done.

He drove out of the lot on his own. The dealer, once I looked it up after, would have meant a tow, a Monday wait, and a bill that made him wince just hearing the number. He saved a good chunk and had his car back the same day.

One key is a risk on any car. On a smart key system where all-keys-lost requires diagnostic equipment, it's an expensive risk. Worth getting a spare made while I'm already there.
