Out near Mission San Luis Rey, a woman called me about her 2015 BRZ. She had bought it used two years earlier with one key, figured she'd get a spare made eventually, and never did. The usual story.
She was not locked out. The fob still worked, sort of. The key blade had cracked at the pivot point where it folds into the housing, and when she went to use the manual blade to get into the door one morning, it snapped. When I got there, the chip inside the broken fob head was still intact. That mattered. I was able to read the transponder data off the cracked housing before I did anything else, which meant I could skip a full immobilizer reset and work faster. I extracted the blade from the lock, decoded the cylinder, and cut two new key blades to match. Then I rebuilt her fob into a fresh shell with the correct internals and registered the new unit to the car.
She went from zero working keys to two in under an hour. She asked if the dealer could have done it faster. I told her the dealer would have needed to order parts and book an appointment, probably a few days out, and the cost would have been quite a bit more than what she paid me in her own driveway.
