WRX Key Tech, Generation by Generation
GD Sedan: Bug-eye, Blob-eye, Hawk-eye
Subaru introduced the Subaru Immobilizer here, pairing a Texas 4D-62 transponder chip with a standard cut blade. The key has to be both cut correctly and electronically matched to the security module. On-board programming keeps things straightforward, and we handle these in 15-25 minutes in your driveway.
GE/GH Sedan and Hatchback
Subaru carried the immobilizer system forward but tightened programming tolerances. The key still uses the Subaru G chip (Texas 4D-60, 80-bit) and a standard blade, but the on-board programming is pickier than the GD generation. One wrong attempt can lock you out of programming mode entirely, which is why this one really needs professional equipment.
Push-Button Start Era
Security tightened noticeably. Subaru moved to its advanced transponder inside a proximity smart key with a laser-cut emergency blade. Carry the fob in your pocket, walk up, the car unlocks. Programming requires OBD-II access with professional tools, but we handle it on-site without any dealer involvement.
VA Platform, Latest Generation
Subaru kept the smart key system but added server authentication requirements for certain programming scenarios. With a working key, we can program a spare on-site. All-keys-lost on these newer cars may require dealer server access, and we tell you that upfront before rolling out.
Which WRX Key Do You Have?
A traditional metal key with a teardrop-shaped fob. You turn it in the ignition to start the car, but the Subaru G chip inside has to match your WRX's immobilizer or the engine won't fire.
Similar to the previous generation with the Subaru G chip (Texas 4D-60) and standard blade. Fob shape changed slightly, key still slides into the ignition. Programming is more sensitive on these cars.
Slim proximity fob, pocket-friendly. The WRX finds it automatically and lets you push a button to start. The emergency blade inside is laser-cut for the door cylinder.
Latest smart key with Subaru's advanced transponder and push-button start. Looks similar to the 2015-2021 fob but runs updated encryption. The hidden emergency blade lets you in the door when the battery dies.

WRX Key Problems We See in San Diego
Immobilizer Antenna Failures
The receiver antenna ring around the ignition cylinder corrodes on 2002-2010 WRXs, on cars near the coast in Encinitas or Coronado salt air. Corrosion breaks the signal between the Subaru G chip and the immobilizer. We test antenna and transponder separately.
Smart Key Battery Drain
Your 2015+ WRX fob keeps polling for the car proximity sensor, even on the counter. That drains the CR2032 in three to six months. Fresh battery first. Drain continues? The proximity receiver needs diagnostics in Carmel Valley or Coronado.
Transponder Chip Delamination
Drivers assume a key that works sometimes has a dying battery. On WRX 2002-2021, the culprit is the transponder chip delaminating from heat cycling and moisture. Internal layers separate, signal goes garbled. We check this first on intermittent no-starts.
On-Board Programming Lockouts
We verify your key count and battery voltage before touching programming on a 2008-2014 WRX. The GE/GH on-board system locks out after three or four failed attempts. Happens often with DIY or rushed programming. Locked out? Call (619) 876-1271.
Can You Self-Program a WRX Key?
You can program the keyless entry remote buttons yourself using a 10-cycle ignition procedure. Lock/unlock only. The transponder chip still needs professional programming to start the car.
No DIY path. The immobilizer requires professional OBD-II tools or dealer equipment. Attempting it solo risks triggering a programming lockout that makes the job harder and more expensive.
The proximity smart key system requires professional OBD-II programming equipment. No on-board self-programming procedure for these cars.
Modern rolling-code encryption means no DIY programming. With a working key, we can handle a spare on-site. All-keys-lost may require dealer server authentication, and we will be straight about that before scheduling.

Worth Knowing
Detail almost no WRX owner knows: the 2002-2003 WRX officially carried the 'Version 7' designation, marking the last time Subaru ever assigned numbered versions to WRX models. After that, the numbered generation system that had tracked the WRX since the early 1990s in JDM was quietly retired for the US market. End of an era for the Subaru nerds who tracked every version like baseball cards.
