I got a text from someone out near a fire road pullout on the Lakeside side of the hills, somewhere off toward Blossom Valley. Mountain biker. He had ridden out, stashed his car at the trailhead, and somewhere on the trail his key left his pocket for good. No spare at home, no dealer close by, and no way to get his WRX off that dirt lot without a working key.
He hiked until he had enough signal to text me a pin and explain the situation. I loaded up and drove out.
The WRX key is a transponder turn-key. No remote, no fob to rebuild, just a blade and a chip. I decoded his ignition cylinder on site to get the correct cut, then used my programming gear to read the immobilizer data from the vehicle and register a new key. Cut it, programmed it, handed it over.
He turned the key, the engine caught and held. Sat there for a second like he was waiting for it to stall. It did not stall.
The nearest dealer would have needed a tow first, then a VIN-keyed parts order, then a separate appointment. His car was already rolling before that first phone call to the dealer would have even connected him to a service advisor. That part he figured out on his own without me saying a word about it.
