Subaru's immobilizer system is the reason your key costs more than a house key. Every Subaru key since the mid-2000s has a transponder chip that communicates with the car every time you turn the ignition or press start. If the chip answers with the right encrypted code, the engine fires. If not, the immobilizer kills fuel injection within seconds. That's why you can't just copy a Subaru key at the hardware store.
