It was a Tuesday in July, middle of the afternoon, and the customer was standing in a Chula Vista parking lot near the heart of Downtown Chula Vista with a Costco run worth of groceries sitting in the trunk of her 2019 WRX. She'd pressed the fob button. Nothing. Tried again. Nothing. The car was locked, the sun was doing what July does here, and the frozen stuff wasn't going to last long.
She called the dealer first. Next available appointment was the following morning. Then she called me.
I was there in about twenty minutes. First thing I did after getting the door open with the mechanical insert key she hadn't needed in months was check the fob itself. CR2032 was dead, not low, fully gone. Swapped the battery on the spot. Still no remote function. The fob needed to be re-paired to the vehicle, which happens sometimes after a total battery drain on this system.
Pulled out the diagnostic equipment, connected to the OBD port, went into the immobilizer and smart key registration, and re-enrolled the existing fob. Tested every button. Tested the push-button start with the fob inside the car and then with it sitting just outside the door to confirm the proximity range was reading right. Everything came back clean.
From her call to her driving away was under 45 minutes. The groceries made it. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a number she wasn't happy about and a wait she definitely wasn't going to do in that heat. I didn't dwell on it. The job was done.
