A damaged or cracked head can let the chip drift out of the read range of the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. Also check that you're using the original programmed key and not a copy that was cut but never enrolled. An unprogrammed key or a dead chip gives you the exact same crank-and-stall behavior. Can I program a replacement key myself at home?

No. The 2008 WRX transponder key has to be enrolled through the immobilizer using diagnostic equipment. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that works on this vehicle for adding or registering a key. A correctly cut but unprogrammed key will turn the ignition and crank the engine, then stall, same as a wrong key would.
