2015 Subaru WRX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long should a replacement key last on a 2015 WRX?

The programming does not expire. Once a fob is enrolled to the car, it stays enrolled unless the vehicle's key memory is cleared or the fob's internal chip fails, which is rare. The CR1632 battery is the thing you will actually replace, typically every one to three years depending on how often you use proximity entry. The shell and buttons on a quality housing hold up to years of pocket carry.

Q: What if my new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. Our work is covered. That said, a correctly programmed fob on a 2015 WRX does not just stop working on its own. If a recently made key starts acting up, the first thing I look at is the vehicle side. The 2015 WRX immobilizer and body control systems can produce intermittent no-start or key-not-detected symptoms that have nothing to do with the fob itself.

Q: I have one working key. Can I just add a second fob, or do I have to replace both at once?

You can add a second fob without touching the first one. On the 2015 WRX, adding a key is done through the diagnostic port and takes the existing fob enrollment into account. The car keeps your current key active and registers the new one alongside it. No need to wipe and start over unless you are doing an all-keys-lost job.

Q: My WRX fob works for lock and unlock but the car will not recognize it for push-to-start. What is going on?

This is a specific symptom that comes up on these cars, and it usually points to one of two things. First, the proximity antenna range can degrade while the RF signal for lock and unlock still works fine, because those are different systems operating differently. A weak battery causes this. Try holding the fob directly against the start button. If the car starts that way, the battery or the antenna pickup is the issue, not the programming.

2015 Subaru WRX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy called me from the Moonlight Beach parking lot in Encinitas on a Tuesday afternoon. He was a bartender at a spot nearby, shift starting at 4. It was 3:28.

His WRX just sat there. Push the start button, nothing. The fob felt fine in his hand, all four buttons clicked, but the car was not reading it. He had already tried locking and unlocking, walking away and back, the whole ritual. Still nothing.

I was already in Encinitas on another call. I told him I could be there in 15 minutes.

When I pulled up, I had him hold the fob flat against the center of the start button before I even opened my bag. The car fired right up. Classic low-battery behavior on this system: the proximity antenna stops picking it up at range, but the close-contact transponder read still works when you give it a clean shot.

We popped the fob open on my van hood. The CR1632 inside was so depleted my tester barely registered it. Swapped in a fresh one, verified all four buttons, walked the door handles, confirmed the push-to-start was reading the fob at normal distance again.

He clocked in at 4:03. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a significant wait just to get an appointment, plus the cost of a new fob he probably did not need. He paid a fraction of what they wanted, and he did not lose a shift doing it.

Subaru WRX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on the 2015 WRX?▼

We use verified blanks that match the factory specification for your fob. On the 2015 WRX, the smart key system is particular about what it will accept during enrollment. We have seen cases where low-quality aftermarket fobs either fail to pair correctly or pair and then drop out after a few days. The internals matter, not just the shell.
