2005 Subaru WRX Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy in Downtown La Mesa had been running his 2005 WRX as a daily for years. One morning it just would not start. Cranked fine, died the second it fired. He tried again. Same thing. The immobilizer light on the dash was flashing at him. He had been using the same key since he bought the car and had never gotten a spare cut.
He called me before he called a tow truck, which was the right move.
I drove out to him in Downtown La Mesa and got a look at the situation. The key was worn down significantly at the blade, and the chip inside was reading inconsistently on my tester. Years of daily use had taken their toll on both the key and the ignition contact. The car was rejecting it intermittently, which is sometimes worse than a clean failure because owners assume it is something else entirely.
I cut a new key blank to his vehicle and programmed the transponder to the immobilizer on site. First crank after that, it fired and stayed running. He stood there for a second just watching the idle like he expected it to die again.
He had already gotten a dealer quote earlier that week for a separate issue and knew what their service lane looked like. When I handed him a tested key and a spare, he said he wished he had just called me the first time for everything.
The dealer route for an all-keys-lost Subaru from this era often involves ordering by VIN, waiting on parts, and scheduling a second appointment to do the programming. We handled it in one visit, same day.
