It was early, maybe 7 a.m., when I got the call from a guy near the auto parts store off Grand Avenue in Old Escondido. He had his 2020 WRX and a problem he could not drive away from.
The car was not reading his fob. At all. He had already tried the door handles, tried holding the fob up to the start button, tried everything short of praying at it. Key-not-detected warning sitting on the dash, doors unlocking only when he used the emergency metal key tucked inside the fob. The car would not start.
When I got there I did the battery first. CR2032, looked original, probably five years of California heat on it. Swapped it out, cleaned the contacts inside the fob, snapped it back together. Tested range, tested the door handles, held it to the start button.
Nothing. Fob was not being seen by the system at all.
That told me the battery was not the whole story. I connected my equipment to the diagnostic port and pulled up the immobilizer and keyless entry system. The fob had dropped out of registration. Not corrupted, not physically broken, just gone from the vehicle's memory, which does happen. I re-registered it, confirmed the transponder was accepted, and ran through every function: lock, unlock, start, the whole sequence.
The moment the engine turned over without complaint, he let out a breath he had apparently been holding since 6:30 that morning. He was parked in the shade and had a shift to get to. He made it.
The dealer was never really part of the conversation. He knew the wait time, knew what the quote would look like, and had already decided he wanted someone who could come to him.
