2003 Subaru WRX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 2003 Subaru WRX actually use?

It's a plain metal key. No remote, no fob, no battery. The 2003 WRX uses a mechanical key cut to a specific profile for the ignition and door locks. You insert it, turn it, the car starts. Replacement means cutting a new key to match the original cuts, either by reading a working key, decoding the lock, or pulling the key code through proper channels. That's it.

Q: Why does the dealer take so long on older Subaru key replacements?

A few reasons. First, blanks for a 2003 are not a priority stock item at most dealers. They'll order it through parts, and that adds days. Second, some service departments route any key job through their locksmith contractor rather than handling it in-house, which adds scheduling lag. Third, if you've lost all keys and need the lock decoded or a code lookup done, that becomes a more involved request internally.

Q: I have a working key but I want a spare cut. Can any locksmith or hardware store do it?

Not always. The key blade profile on the 2003 WRX is not the same as a common household or basic car key. Hardware store kiosks and general locksmiths sometimes don't stock the correct blank, and using a close-but-wrong blank produces a key that fits loosely or binds in the ignition. That kind of sloppy fit causes wear on the tumblers over time.

Q: My key turns hard or feels like it's catching in the ignition. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Could be either, and the 2003 WRX ignition cylinder has a known tendency to get stiff as it ages, especially if the car spent time sitting. Worn key cuts can also cause binding because the tumblers aren't lifting cleanly. Start by trying your other key if you have one. If both keys feel the same way, the cylinder itself is likely worn or dirty. If only one key binds, the cuts on that key may be worn down.

2003 Subaru WRX Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

There's a farmers market lot in Downtown Lemon Grove where vendors set up in the early evening. I got a call from one of the regulars there, an organic produce vendor who had snapped her key off in the door lock after a long day hauling crates.

She had the broken piece in her hand when I pulled up. The good news was that both halves were there and I could read the cuts off the original. No guessing, no decoding needed.

I pulled the right blank from my kit, cut the replacement on the spot, and had her opening her door and starting the car inside five minutes. She'd already called the dealer before she called me. They wanted her to tow it in, book an appointment, and come back another day.

Her car sat in the same lot she'd been working all evening. The whole thing was done before she finished breaking down her table.

Subaru WRX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does the Subaru dealer take for a key replacement on a 2003 WRX?▼

For a mechanical key like this one, the delay is usually about parts, not programming. Dealers often treat key blanks as a parts-counter order rather than something kept in stock for a 20-year-old car. Best case, they have a blank on hand and a service writer cuts it same day. More commonly, you're looking at a parts order that takes a few days, then a separate visit to pick it up.
