He had been overseas for a few weeks, backpacking. One of those trips where you carry everything on your back and think through every ounce. He landed, made it to level four of the airport parking structure, and the WRX just sat there.
The key turned fine. Car started. Then it stalled almost immediately. He tried again. Same thing. He had no idea what was happening and neither, apparently, did the two people he called first.
He found me online and called from the garage. I asked him a few questions and had a pretty good picture before I even arrived. That start-and-stall pattern on a Subaru of this generation points to the immobilizer not fully recognizing the key. Sometimes it is a marginal chip read, sometimes the ignition cylinder reader ring is the issue, sometimes it is the key itself degrading. You do not know until you test it.
I pulled into the garage about forty minutes after he called. The WRX was exactly where he said it was, and he was sitting on his pack next to it looking pretty done with the day.
Connected my equipment to the OBD port and pulled the immobilizer data. His original key was still in the system, but it was reading inconsistently. The chip was borderline. The key head had a hairline crack running right through the collar, and enough time and humidity had done what you would expect.
Cut and programmed a new key on site. Verified the start, let it idle, checked that the immobilizer was reading clean. He drove out of that garage the same morning, which was the only outcome he was interested in.
The dealer was going to need him to schedule, wait for a parts order, and possibly look at a multi-day turnaround. That was not the situation he was in.
