2018 Subaru WRX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement key for the 2018 WRX last?

The programming does not expire. A properly registered fob stays in the system until something actively removes it, like an all-keys-lost reset or a dealer clearing the module. What does wear out is the physical fob: the shell, the buttons, and eventually the battery. CR2032 cells in a key that gets daily use typically last one to three years depending on how often you are hitting buttons.

Q: What if the replacement key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call us. The work is warranted. That said, a fob that was working and then stopped is usually pointing at the vehicle side, not the key. WRX owners on forums have documented intermittent no-start situations where the dash shows a key warning, the car sits for several minutes, and then starts normally. That pattern points toward the immobilizer or a related module doing something inconsistent, not a fob that lost its programming. A fob does not randomly un-register itself.

Q: I have a spare key for my 2018 WRX but I never got it programmed. Can you add it without erasing my working key?

Yes, and this is one of the more common calls I get on this generation. Adding a key to an existing working key is a different procedure than all-keys-lost. The working key stays registered, and the new one gets added alongside it. No timed countdown, no module wipe. Takes about 20 to 30 minutes on site.

Q: What happens if I lose both keys to my 2018 WRX? Is all-keys-lost even possible without going to the dealer?

It is possible and I handle it regularly. All-keys-lost on a 2018 WRX requires diagnostic equipment to communicate with the immobilizer, clear the existing key registry, and enroll new fobs from zero. The process has a built-in timed sequence that cannot be skipped, so the job takes longer than a standard add-a-key, typically 45 minutes to an hour on site. The old keys are erased in the process, so anything previously registered cannot start the car.

2018 Subaru WRX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already working in Coronado Village on a Saturday evening when the call came in. A couple had walked out of a sushi place near the water to find their 2018 WRX sitting dark. The fob was unresponsive. Neither of them knew about the passive backup start method, so to them the car was just dead. They were already looking up ride shares and talking about leaving it overnight.

I was maybe ten minutes away with the right blanks already in the van.

When I got there, first thing I did was pop the battery cover on their fob right on the hood of the car. The CR2032 inside was the original factory cell, and a voltage check confirmed it had nothing left. Swapped it on the spot, reseated the contacts, and tested range before I even touched the programming tools. Fob range came back clean.

The transponder side still needed to be confirmed, so I ran a full key test through the diagnostic port, verified the fob was properly registered to the immobilizer, and checked that all four buttons were responding. Everything came back solid. The car started on the first try.

They did not need a new fob. They did not need a Monday dealer appointment. They drove home that same night, and the dealer comparison came up only because the husband mentioned what he thought it was going to cost him. It was a fraction of that, done in a parking lot, on a Saturday.

When the van is stocked right, a late call like that is the same job as a Tuesday morning.

Subaru WRX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket fobs for the 2018 WRX?▼

Both exist in the market, and the answer matters on this car. The 2018 WRX smart key system is selective about what it will accept during programming. Aftermarket fobs vary in build quality and some do not pair cleanly with the immobilizer, which means you can end up paying for a fob that partially works or does not register at all.
