2002 Subaru WRX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does the whole job take once you arrive?

For a 2002 WRX with a mechanical key, it's fast. We decode the lock or use the key code if you have it, cut the blade, and test it. Most visits are done in under thirty minutes from the time I park the van. There's no programming wait, no security timer, no module communication step. The job is mechanical start to finish.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer for this car?

Significantly faster, and the dealer comparison almost isn't fair on a 2002 WRX. Newer Subarus can create real headaches for dealers on all-keys-lost jobs - some involve pulling modules and shipping them out for days or weeks of turnaround. The 2002 WRX doesn't have that problem. It's a mechanical key. We come to the car, read the lock, cut the key, and you're driving. No appointment, no tow, no waiting on stock.

Q: My 2002 WRX ignition feels loose and sometimes takes a few tries to turn. Is that a key problem or something else?

This is one of the more common complaints on early WRXs. The ignition cylinders on these cars can wear over time, especially when the key ring is heavy or the car gets used hard. A worn cylinder can make even a correct key feel sloppy, and in some cases it starts to feel like the key won't turn at all. Before assuming the key is the problem, check whether it's the cylinder.

Q: I have the key code from my original paperwork. Does that speed anything up?

Yes, it helps. If you have the factory key code, we can cut directly to spec without needing to decode the lock. Faster job, no contact with the cylinder required. If you don't have it, no problem - decoding the door lock is standard practice and gets the same result. Either way, bring whatever documentation came with the car when you first bought it. Some owners find the code on dealer paperwork or the original title documents.

2002 Subaru WRX Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Downtown National City, late on a Saturday afternoon. A guy texted me a pin off 8th Street near the trolley station. He'd been parked there since morning, spent the day running errands on foot, came back to his 2002 WRX and realized somewhere between the farmer's market and the taco shop, his key had walked off.

No spare. No plan. Just a car sitting at a meter.

I pulled up with the van, pulled out my key decoder, read the lock right there on the driver's door. Cut the blade to match, cleaned up the edges, and handed it over. He turned it in the ignition on the first try. Didn't stall, didn't fight it, just started.

The whole thing took maybe twenty minutes. He'd already looked up the dealer out of habit and saw they weren't open on weekends anyway. That part didn't surprise either of us.

Subaru WRX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key for my WRX after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call us. Subaru dealers in the area keep standard business hours, and most have no Sunday service at all. If you're stranded on a Friday night or a Saturday afternoon in Downtown National City - or anywhere else in the area - the dealer isn't an option until at minimum Monday morning, and that's assuming they can fit you in. For a 2002 WRX with a mechanical key, there's no parts ordering involved on our end.
