There's a farmers market off La Mesa Boulevard that runs into the evening, and I got a call from a vendor there, an organic produce seller who parks her 2011 WRX in the back lot. She had one key left and it was showing a hairline crack at the base of the plastic head where the blade meets the bow. She wanted a spare before the original gave out completely.
She'd already called the dealer. They needed her to bring the car in, quoted her a wait and a price she wasn't happy with, and told her she'd need an appointment.
I pulled into that lot and set up on the tailgate of my van. The WRX transponder setup is not complicated if you have the right equipment. I connected through the OBD port, pulled up the immobilizer, and registered a new transponder chip to the car. Cut the blade to her vehicle on site. The whole thing took under 45 minutes including the time I spent explaining what I was doing while she finished selling the last of her kale.
She kept the cracked original as a backup and drove out of there with a fresh working key. The car doesn't know or care where it was programmed.
