A barista at a shared driveway fourplex in La Mesa had exactly that story. Her only key to her 2011 Subaru WRX cracked at the blade pivot and snapped when she tried to open the door. Remote head in one hand, blade stuck in the lock. Zero working keys.
I used my VVDI2 to clone the transponder data from the broken key head since the chip was still intact inside the cracked housing. That saved time because I didn't need a full all-keys-lost procedure. I extracted the blade, decoded the lock, and cut two fresh keys. Her fob, FCC ID , was a 3-button remote head that I rebuilt into a new shell with the cloned chip.
She went from zero keys to two in about 40 minutes. Total was around $116. A full AKL would cost more, and the dealer wanted $283 either way. If you have the broken pieces, bring them.
