A guy called me from the beach parking lot just outside Otay Mesa, over near Nestor. He'd been kayaking and somewhere between the water and the car, his only key was gone. Checked the kayak, checked his gear bag, walked back to the launch area twice. Nothing. He drove home. The dealer route would have required a tow, an appointment, and a wait measured in days. He asked me later what would have happened if he'd just called a tow truck first. I told him he'd have gotten there eventually, but it would have cost him a lot more than a Saturday afternoon.
