Out in the Sweetwater area of National City, I got a call from a guy who had snapped the blade of his 2014 Subaru BRZ key off inside the ignition cylinder. Clean break, right at the shoulder. He had already called another locksmith who told him the cylinder would need to be drilled out, then replaced. New cylinder, new key, the whole teardown.

When I got there, the broken fragment was fully recessed in the cylinder. I used a dedicated extraction tool, working carefully along the wafer surfaces without scoring them. Took about ten minutes to get the piece out clean. Once I had the cylinder free of debris, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position. That gave me the exact bitting I needed to cut a new blade on site.
The BRZ runs a smart key system with a separate fob and an emergency insert blade. The blade I decoded goes into the fob housing, so I cut it to spec and matched the original profile. Then I handled the fob programming through the OBD port so the new key was fully enrolled in the immobilizer and all four buttons were confirmed working.
His car looked exactly the same as before I arrived. No cylinder damage, no scratched housing, nothing replaced that didn't need replacing.
He mentioned the other locksmith's estimate almost as a joke at that point. I just told him destructive entry is always the last move, not the first one.
