How the Countryman Key System Evolved from R60 to F60
R60, Gen 1
OBD-II is the only path on the R60. Your Countryman carries a 3-button remote-head key with an ID48 transponder bolted to BMW CAS3, plus a high-security laser-cut blade. No push-button start on this generation. We plug straight into the diagnostic port in your San Diego driveway, write the chip to the CAS3 module, and the engine fires.
F60, Gen 2 with Push-Button Start
OBD-II or on-board, depending on what shape the car is in. The F60 smart-key trim upgrades to CAS4 with proximity detection. 3-button smart key, ID48 chip, CR2032, push-button start. Walk up, the door opens, push the button, the engine catches. We carry the BMW server tokens needed to flash these on the curb in San Diego.
F60, Gen 2 Base Trim
OBD-II only on these. The 2017-2018 base trim ships a flip key instead of the smart fob. Same CAS4 immobilizer, same ID48 chip, no push-button start. You flip the blade out, insert it, and turn to start. Programming runs OBD-II with PIN extraction.
U25, Gen 3 (All-New Platform)
For 2024 the Countryman jumped to BMW's newest electronics, gas and electric alike. Proximity smart keys with a tougher encrypted immobilizer than the outgoing F60. A spare or all-keys-lost job needs up-to-date tooling and a live server session, which we run curbside in San Diego.
Identify Your Countryman Fob
Standard R60 remote-head key: plastic head with three buttons, the high-security blade moulded into the housing, ID48 chip embedded in the head. You slide it into the ignition like a 1990s key.
Slim proximity smart key. Keep it in your pocket; the Countryman shakes hands as you walk up, the doors unlock, push-button start fires the engine. Hidden emergency blade inside the body for the day the CR2032 dies on you.
Flip-action housing: blade folds into the fob when stored, side button pops it out, blade slots into the ignition and turns. Same ID48 chip and CAS4 immobilizer as the proximity smart key, just without push-button start.
U25 is the all-new 2024-and-up Countryman, including the electric Countryman E and SE. The proximity fob handles walk-up unlock and push-button start, emergency blade tucked inside. We program these in San Diego with the BMW server tokens the encrypted immobilizer demands, no dealer tow needed.
San Diego Pricing on a Countryman Key
Quoted price covers the key blank, cutting, programming, and on-vehicle testing; San Diego lockouts run $105 to $145.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the San Diego Mini Dealer
Same BMW-spec programming, same OEM-quality key blanks, same end result. The van just skips the Mission Valley waiting room and the dealer markup.
San Diego Countryman Key Problems We Knock Out
Key Fob Battery Drain
Owners blame the fob when the issue is parasitic drain. Mini released SI M12 07 13 covering premature CR2032 discharge on 2011-2018 Countryman fobs. Fresh battery plus software update closes it. If drain repeats, we cut and program curbside in Encinitas.
Transponder Sync Failure
First check on a 2011-2016 R60 that cranks but refuses to fire: the BMW CAS3 immobilizer handshake. A battery swap, jump, or moisture knocks the transponder out of sync. We plug in, scan, reprogram the ID48 chip. Common in Mira Mesa, Carmel Valley, Encinitas.
Proximity Sensor Malfunction
CAS4 in the 2017-2018 F60 smart key handles proximity detection. When it glitches, the Countryman stops recognising the fob: doors will not unlock on approach, push-button start goes intermittent. Usually software. We reprogram on the curb with Autel IM608.
Can You Program a Countryman Key Yourself?
No path. The R60 CAS3 immobilizer requires professional OBD-II tools to write a new transponder chip. Nothing customer-accessible exists.
No path. CAS4 on the F60 smart key needs professional gear plus server authentication. No add-key procedure for owners.
No path. Same CAS4 immobilizer as the smart key. The flip-key form factor does not change the security tier. Locksmith with the right tools is the only route.

San Diego Mini Trivia
Worth knowing: the 2011 Countryman was the first Mini ever to ship with all-wheel drive, and the ALL4 system shared its key immobilizer DNA directly with the BMW X1 sibling rolling off the same parent platform. Two very different shapes, one BMW security architecture underneath, one toolchain that flashes both.
