Out in Eden Gardens, Solana Beach, a Countryman owner had both keys go soft on him within the same month. Lock button, unlock button, nothing. Car still started fine, so he figured the remote functions just needed reprogramming and kept putting it off.
Then he lost one key entirely. Down to one fob that wouldn't lock the doors remotely, and he knew the backup was gone for good.

I drove out to him. The round fob design on these is a tight package, but once you know the internal battery situation it stops being mysterious. We cut a new remote head key, connected to the OBD port, ran the immobilizer registration, and paired the remote functions. The old lost key got wiped from the system so it's no use to anyone.
The whole job was done on site in under an hour. He asked about the dealer timeline almost as an afterthought. Three to five days and a bill that would have hurt. He saved a good chunk and didn't move the car once.
He also got a spare made the same visit. Learned that lesson the hard way.
