I got a call out to Fanita Ranch on a Tuesday afternoon. The owner of a 2012 MINI Countryman had one key left, and it was giving her inconsistent results. Sometimes the locks responded, sometimes they didn't. The car would start fine when it did, but she'd had one morning where it just sat there and she was late.
She'd already gone to the dealer. They told her they'd need to order the key to her VIN, that parts availability on older MINI remote head keys wasn't guaranteed same-week, and gave her a number that made her pause. She found me instead.
I pulled up to the house and she handed me the key. The fob body had a hairline crack near the seam, barely visible, just enough to let the internals shift slightly. CR2032 was reading low but not dead. The contact on the negative side had a slight outward bend, so the cell wasn't seated flush.
I seated a fresh battery correctly, reseated the board, closed the shell carefully so the seam lined up, and then we walked through the full function check: lock, unlock, all three buttons, confirmed startup, confirmed the immobilizer was reading the transponder normally.
That was it. No new key needed that day. She wanted a spare cut and programmed anyway, which made sense given the single-key situation, and I had the blank on the van. Did the whole job in her driveway in about forty minutes.
The dealer quote was still sitting in her email when she paid me. She mentioned the difference without me bringing it up.
