It's one piece doing two jobs. The blade cuts into the ignition and turns it like any key. Inside the head, a transponder chip talks to the vehicle's immobilizer the moment you insert and turn. If the immobilizer doesn't get a valid response from that chip, the engine won't run, or it cranks and immediately dies. Separate from that, the remote buttons broadcast a wireless signal to lock and unlock the doors and pop the liftgate.

Both sides have to be programmed to your specific Countryman. A new key that's been cut to fit but not registered to the immobilizer will turn the ignition and do nothing. That's why replacement isn't just a cutting job. The programming is the other half, and on the R60, that half requires proper diagnostic equipment.

Not necessarily. If the car starts, the transponder side of your key is alive. Lock and unlock range dropping off, or the buttons dying entirely, is a separate issue. Start with the CR2032 battery, which is the cell in the Countryman remote head key. It's a common swap, any drug store carries it. Pop the key head open carefully and check that the battery is seated flat and the contacts aren't pushed away from it.

If a fresh CR2032 doesn't bring the remote buttons back, the issue could be a cracked circuit board inside the key head from a drop, or corroded contacts. At that point it's worth having someone look at the key itself before assuming you need a full replacement and reprogram.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2011 MINI Countryman. Can I program it myself?

No. The R60 Countryman does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for the remote head key. There's no ignition-turn ritual, no button combination. Registering a new key to the immobilizer requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. If you bought the fob online, it still needs a locksmith or shop with the right tools to pair it to your car and cut the blade to your vehicle. The part you bought online just means you've already sourced the hardware. The programming still has to happen on site.
