2011 MINI Countryman
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is a remote head key and how does it actually work on the 2011 Countryman?

It's one piece doing two jobs. The blade cuts into the ignition and turns it like any key. Inside the head, a transponder chip talks to the vehicle's immobilizer the moment you insert and turn. If the immobilizer doesn't get a valid response from that chip, the engine won't run, or it cranks and immediately dies. Separate from that, the remote buttons broadcast a wireless signal to lock and unlock the doors and pop the liftgate.

Q: Why does the dealer charge so much for a replacement key on a 2011 MINI Countryman?

A few things stack up. Dealers mark up the key part itself through their parts department, then charge service department labor rates on top. They also frequently require the vehicle to be physically present at the dealership, which means a tow if you're already stranded. Lead time on the key part can add a day or two to the whole thing. With EZ Car Keyz, I come to you in San Ysidro Village with the equipment and the key.

Q: My 2011 Countryman starts fine but the lock and unlock buttons on the key stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. If the car starts, the transponder side of your key is alive. Lock and unlock range dropping off, or the buttons dying entirely, is a separate issue. Start with the CR2032 battery, which is the cell in the Countryman remote head key. It's a common swap, any drug store carries it. Pop the key head open carefully and check that the battery is seated flat and the contacts aren't pushed away from it.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2011 MINI Countryman. Can I program it myself?

No. The R60 Countryman does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for the remote head key. There's no ignition-turn ritual, no button combination. Registering a new key to the immobilizer requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. If you bought the fob online, it still needs a locksmith or shop with the right tools to pair it to your car and cut the blade to your vehicle. The part you bought online just means you've already sourced the hardware.

2011 MINI Countryman Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy over in San Ysidro Village. His 2011 MINI Countryman keys had been stolen out of his bag at a gym. He was calm about it, which honestly made it feel worse. He knew someone out there had the physical key and the programmed fob for his specific car.

That changes the job. This isn't just "make a new key." This is wipe everything first, then build back from zero. The old keys had to be dead before anything else mattered.

I pulled up to the parking lot where his car was sitting. Popped the OBD port, connected the diagnostic equipment, and ran a full immobilizer reset on the Countryman. Every previously registered key, gone. The stolen pair would not start that car again, period. Then I registered two fresh remote head keys in the same session so he'd have a working set and a backup.

He asked, almost as an afterthought, what the dealer would have wanted for this. I told him to call and find out. He pulled up his phone, got a quote, and just put it back in his pocket without saying anything.

Done on site. No tow. No waiting three days for parts to be ordered.

MINI Countryman Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 2011 MINI Countryman remote head key have?▼

Three buttons. On the Countryman remote head key, those cover lock, unlock, and liftgate release. When I cut and program a replacement on site, I run through all three functions before I hand the key over. If one button isn't responding or the range feels short, that gets sorted before I close the job.
