The 2017 MINI Countryman smart key runs a CR2032 and the fob has four buttons. Before you assume the key is dead, pop it open and check that the battery is seated flat with full contact on both sides. A slightly tilted battery reads just fine on a volt meter but can cause intermittent dropout at the antenna, so the car sees the fob sometimes and not others. That "key not detected" warning showing up randomly is almost always a contact issue or a weak battery before it's ever a dead fob. Worth two minutes before you spend anything. Also worth knowing: this generation of Countryman shares its electronic architecture with other F-series MINIs from the same era. That matters because adding or replacing a smart key on this car needs diagnostic equipment communicating with the vehicle's immobilizer over the OBD port. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick to enroll a new fob. If you bought a replacement fob online, you still need someone with the right tools to pair it to the car. The fob alone does nothing until it's registered.

2017 MINI Countryman Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A Bressi Ranch resident reached out on a Tuesday afternoon. She was parked in her driveway, heading back out after lunch, and the Countryman just didn't respond. She'd walk up to the door, reach for the handle, nothing. The dash lit up with a key-not-detected warning the one time she got the door open manually using the physical blade inside the fob. I got there, popped the existing fob open right on the hood. The CR2032 wasn't dead, but one of the contact clips had a slight outward bow, so the battery was rocking instead of pressing flat. That intermittent contact was the whole story. Seated a fresh CR2032 the right way, confirmed the clip tension, and the car responded immediately.

I still ran through every button and tested the door handle response on both front doors before calling it done. Took about twenty minutes total, most of that just being methodical.
