I got a call out to Dictionary Hill in Spring Valley on a Tuesday afternoon. A woman had a 2014 MINI Countryman sitting in her driveway, no working key. The fob had taken a hard drop onto tile, the key blade was fine, but the fob housing had cracked and the buttons were intermittent at best. She had called the dealer first. They told her to tow it in and plan for three to five days. That answer did not work for her.
I pulled up, popped open the cracked fob on the hood of my van, and the damage was real. The internal circuit board had a hairline crack near one of the button contacts. Not something you fix with tape and hope.
New fob, cut the blade to her vehicle, connected to the OBD port, and ran the programming sequence to pair the new key to the immobilizer. The whole time she stood there watching, which I prefer. When people can see the process they stop wondering if it's some mysterious thing only a dealer can do.
Walked her through all four buttons. Locks, unlocks, the hatch release. Everything responded clean. Started the car twice to confirm the transponder handshake was solid.
She mentioned the dealer quote almost as an afterthought, said she wished she had called me first. I hear that a lot on this side of Spring Valley.
