I got a call out to Harbison Canyon on a Tuesday afternoon. The owner had a 2015 MINI Hardtop 4 Door sitting in her driveway, and she wasn't going anywhere.
She'd been getting an intermittent key-not-detected warning for a few days. Figured it was the battery. Swapped it herself, seemed fine for a day, then the car just stopped acknowledging the fob entirely. Push the start button, nothing. The warning was back and staying.
When I got there, I asked her to hand me the fob before I touched anything else. The CR2032 she'd put in was the right type, but one of the battery contacts had a slight bow to it, probably from the original battery swelling just enough over time to push the clip out of position. I reset the contact, seated a fresh cell I brought with me, and tested the fob range from outside the car. It was reading fine at the door. But inside at the start button, still nothing.
That told me the fob was communicating but wasn't enrolled properly with the vehicle's security system anymore. Happens sometimes after extended no-start situations where the car sits without seeing a registered fob for a while, and it can also happen if someone unknowingly triggered a lockout condition by repeated failed start attempts.
I connected through the OBD port, ran the fob through the registration sequence, and confirmed the immobilizer was seeing it correctly. Walked every button, tested the start, locked and unlocked from outside. Everything came back clean.
She mentioned she'd called the dealer first. They told her to bring it in, said it might be a few days before the key department could look at it. She came home, searched around, and found me instead. She was back inside making lunch by the time I was packing up the van.
