I got a call from Cardiff-by-the-Sea on a Saturday evening, maybe 8:30. The owner of a 2016 MINI Hardtop 4 Door had been at dinner near the beach and came back to a car that acted like it had never seen his fob before. Doors wouldn't unlock passively, the start button just blinked, and the dash was showing a key-not-detected warning. He'd had the car for two years with no issues.
He'd already tried holding the fob closer to the start button, which is the right instinct on these when the battery is weak. Didn't help.
I got there in about twenty minutes. First thing I did was open the fob right there in the parking lot. The CR2032 inside looked fine visually but I swapped it out anyway with a fresh one from my kit. Tested it. Still the same behavior. At that point the fob itself wasn't the problem.
Pulled out the diagnostic equipment, connected at the OBD port, and ran a scan on the immobilizer and body control side. The fob wasn't registering at all. Turned out the key had dropped out of the system's memory, which does happen on these F-series cars, usually after a battery disconnect or a module update at a shop that didn't handle key retention properly. He mentioned he'd had some electrical work done a few weeks back. That lined it up.
Re-enrolled the fob, confirmed all four buttons, confirmed passive entry on both front doors, confirmed the start button recognized it cleanly. He was back to driving in under forty-five minutes from when he called me.
He said the last place he thought he'd be spending a Saturday night was watching someone work on his MINI in a parking lot. Honestly, same. But that's the job, and Cardiff is a good place to be at 9 PM even when you're working.
