I got a call from a Paceman owner in Richland, here in San Marcos, on a Tuesday afternoon. He was parked in his driveway and the car would not acknowledge the fob at all. No door unlock, no response from the push plate, and a key-not-detected warning sitting on the dash every time he got close.
He had already bought a replacement fob online. That is where most of these calls start now.
I pulled up, and the first thing I did was test the original fob, not the new one. It had almost no signal range. Standing two feet from the driver door got a weak response, but a foot farther and nothing. That is a battery-and-contact problem, not a dead key. I opened it up and the CR2032 was the original, still showing some voltage on a meter but not enough to drive the RF signal reliably. The contact had a slight depression in it from years of use.
I seated a fresh battery, cleaned the contacts, and the original fob came right back. Lock, unlock, and the car recognized it through the glass from across the driveway.
The online fob he bought still needed to be paired, so we did that too, using the diagnostic port to register it alongside the original. Now he has a working primary and a programmed spare, which is the right place to be with this system.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him days out and wanted him to tow the car in. He was in his own driveway the whole time. That part always gets me.
