A guy in Carmel Mountain Ranch called me on a Saturday afternoon. He had one key for his 2013 MINI Paceman and it had been doing something odd for a few weeks. The remote functions worked fine, lock and unlock, no problem. But twice in the past month the car cranked, fired up for a second, then immediately died. Both times it eventually started on the third or fourth try and he chalked it up to something random.

The transponder side of his key had an enrollment issue, likely degraded over time or knocked loose by one of those earlier failed starts. The remote functions run independently, so a new battery brought those back while the transponder problem stayed hidden underneath.
Re-enrolled the key, cleared the fault, and it started clean on the first crank. The whole job was done in his driveway before he finished his coffee. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a significant wait just to get a diagnostic appointment, not even the fix. He saved a good chunk and did not lose the car for three days to a service queue.
