2021 Jeep Renegade Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in the Mission San Luis Rey Area, I got a call from a woman who had been using her 2021 Renegade as her daily driver for about a year with no issues.
One morning she walked out, the fob did nothing, and the vehicle would not recognize it at all. She had already bought a fresh CR2032 from the drugstore and swapped it herself. Still nothing. She figured she was looking at a tow to the dealer and a multi-day wait.
I told her to stay put.
When I pulled up, the fob was completely unresponsive from any distance. The emergency insert blade inside the fob still let her get into the car manually, which told me the fob hardware was likely fine and this was a programming issue, probably a corrupted pairing between the fob and the vehicle security system rather than a dead fob outright.
I connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port, pulled up the Renegade's immobilizer module, and confirmed the fob was no longer recognized. Ran the all-keys-lost procedure: security handshake, clear the old key data, register the fob fresh to her VIN. The system walked through its enrollment sequence, and the fob came back fully alive. I tested every button, walked the door handles, confirmed the push-button start was reading the fob cleanly, and checked the emergency blade while I was at it.
Done in her driveway, before she would have even reached the service advisor's desk at the dealer. She saved a good chunk compared to the dealer route, and she did not lose her car for two days.
The dealer is the right call in a narrow set of situations. For the 2021 Renegade, most key jobs are not that situation.
