How Patriot Key Security Changed Over the Years
First Generation
Turn-key ignition with an ID46 (PCF7936) transponder buried in the head, handshaking with SKIM before the engine catches. Three buttons, standard blade, CR2032 coin cell. Marco pulls the PIN through OBD-II and writes the new key in 20 to 30 minutes parked in a Spring Valley driveway.
First Generation Facelift
Electronics under the dash got a refresh, but the key system stayed put. Same 3-button remote head key, ID46 (PCF7936) chip, SKIM brain, OBD-II program flow with a 4-digit PIN. The 2011 to 2013 builds run identical to the early MK years.
Second Facelift
The flip key showed up here. Same ID46 (PCF7936) chip, same SKIM system, same OBD-II PIN procedure, but the blade folds into the fob instead of sticking out. Standard cut blade, CR2032 coin cell, no functional change under the hood from the earlier builds.
Final Model Year
Final-year Patriot rolled off the line with the same security it launched with: ID46 (PCF7936) transponder, SKIM immobilizer, 3-button flip key. Nothing new in the key system. All-keys-lost? Marco pulls the PIN and handles everything from the driveway curb.
Which Key Is in Your Patriot Carry?
Traditional key with the buttons living in the plastic head and a permanent metal blade sticking out the bottom. The most common Patriot key for the first seven model years.
Same key system underneath, but the blade folds into the fob shell. Press the side button and the blade swings out. Higher trims caught this style first and by 2014 it became standard.

Top Patriot Key Failures We See in 619
SKIM Module Failure
Patriot cranks but never catches, dash security light holds solid or strobes fast. SKIM losing the conversation with the transponder. Van diagnoses curbside in Mira Mesa, and if the module needs to come out, Marco reprograms the keys on the same visit.
Transponder Chip Recognition Loss
Owners blame the cylinder when a 2007-2012 Patriot starts intermittently. Real culprit is usually a weakening transponder chip or a fatigued antenna ring. Marco tests chip signal first; sometimes a $15 antenna fix, not a $200 key.
Fob Battery Drain
Remote-head and flip-key buttons can develop an internal short that flat-kills the CR2032 in days instead of months. Common across 2011-2017 builds. Van checks for the short first. If internals are toast, Marco transfers the chip to a new shell or cuts fresh.
Can You Program a Patriot Key in San Diego?
Patriot SKIM wants a PIN code and an OBD-II scan tool for every key program. No on-board self-procedure exists for any year. Locksmith or dealer only.

Jeep Trivia Worth Knowing
The Patriot's SKIM system is shared across multiple Chrysler platforms, including the Dodge Caliber and the Compass. Chrysler kept the same security architecture running from 2007 all the way through 2017, which is why the same diagnostic tools and procedures cover the whole family. One of the most consistent immobilizer systems in the Chrysler lineup.
