I got a call from a guy parked at a dirt pullout on the edge of town, one of those overlooks off the back roads east of Downtown Ramona. He had been hiking, thought his key was in his pocket the whole time, and came back to nothing. His 2014 Jeep Patriot was just sitting there.
He had already called another locksmith before me. That guy told him the ignition would need to be drilled and replaced to get the vehicle started, and quoted him accordingly. He called me for a second opinion.
I drove out to him. Decoded the door lock on site, read the wafer positions without touching the internals in any damaging way. Once I had the cut information, I cut a fresh blade, built out the full remote head key with a verified transponder, and ran the all-keys-lost programming sequence through the OBD port. The old key got erased from the vehicle's memory at the same time. His lock cylinder was exactly as it was when I got there.
No drilling. No replacement ignition housing. No tow. He asked me at one point if this kind of job was unusual. It is not. I do it regularly. But I understood why the first call he made gave him the worst-case answer. Some guys are set up for cylinder swaps and that is what they quote.
He saved a good chunk compared to what he was originally told, and he left with a working key and a working lock.
