How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

More. Not a little more -- noticeably more.

When you have a working key, adding a spare is a shorter process. The system already has a valid key enrolled, so we're just adding to it. When all keys are lost, the immobilizer has to be fully accessed, the old key data cleared, and the new key or keys learned from a blank state. That takes longer and requires a deeper level of tool access.

The smart move: if you're down to one key on your Patriot, get a spare cut and programmed now. And if you're already in an all-keys-lost situation, get two keys done at the same visit. Adding a second key while we're already in the system costs a lot less than a separate trip later.

Start with the CR2032 battery. On a remote head key, the transponder chip that starts the car draws power from the ignition field, not the battery -- so a dead battery kills the remote functions while the engine still turns over normally. That's actually one of the more confusing failure patterns on these because owners assume if it starts, the key is fine.

Pop the back of the fob, swap the CR2032, and test all four buttons. If range comes back, you're done. If the buttons are still dead after a fresh battery, the issue is either a cracked circuit board inside the fob housing -- common when the fob has been dropped -- or the receiver on the vehicle side. A quick test is to stand close to the car when you press the buttons. If it only works within a foot or two, that's a weak transmitter, not a receiver problem.

The 2017 Patriot was one of the last model years before it was discontinued. Will parts and keys be hard to find going forward?
