2017 Jeep Patriot
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

More. Not a little more -- noticeably more. When you have a working key, adding a spare is a shorter process. The system already has a valid key enrolled, so we're just adding to it. When all keys are lost, the immobilizer has to be fully accessed, the old key data cleared, and the new key or keys learned from a blank state. That takes longer and requires a deeper level of tool access.

Q: Do aftermarket remote head keys work on the 2017 Jeep Patriot, or do I need an OEM key?

Aftermarket keys generally work on the Patriot as long as the factory FCC ID on the replacement matches your original. The transponder chip inside needs to be the correct type for your vehicle's immobilizer. A lot of owners buy aftermarket remote head keys online and then bring them to a locksmith for cutting and programming -- that's a legitimate way to save on parts cost.

Q: My 2017 Patriot starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Is the key dying?

Start with the CR2032 battery. On a remote head key, the transponder chip that starts the car draws power from the ignition field, not the battery -- so a dead battery kills the remote functions while the engine still turns over normally. That's actually one of the more confusing failure patterns on these because owners assume if it starts, the key is fine. Pop the back of the fob, swap the CR2032, and test all four buttons.

Q: The 2017 Patriot was one of the last model years before it was discontinued. Will parts and keys be hard to find going forward?

Not for a while. The remote head key used on the Patriot was shared across a wide range of Jeep and Chrysler products from that era, so aftermarket supply is strong and not going anywhere soon. These aren't rare keys. Where you might eventually feel the pinch is on mechanical parts -- ignition cylinders, door lock cylinders -- if they wear out. But the key itself, the fob, the blade, the transponder? That's a well-supplied part.

2017 Jeep Patriot Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Fire Mountain, Oceanside. A guy called me on a Tuesday because his 2017 Jeep Patriot key had snapped at the base of the blade where it meets the fob housing. Classic stress fracture right at the pivot point. The blade was still in the ignition. The fob body with the buttons was in his hand, useless on its own.

He had already called the dealer. They told him to tow it in and plan for a wait on parts. He wasn't thrilled about that.

I drove out to his street. First order of business was getting the broken blade out of the ignition cylinder without damaging the tumbler -- that part matters because a scratched-up cylinder can cause its own headaches later. Once that was done, I had a clean ignition to work with.

The 2017 Patriot remote head key is a single unit, fob and blade combined, so the replacement had to be a matching remote head key. I cut a new blade to his vehicle, programmed the transponder and the remote to the car through the OBD port, and went through all four buttons to confirm they were reading. Lock, unlock, remote start input, liftgate -- all responding. Then I stood there and actually turned the key through the ignition a few times to make sure it cycled cleanly and the immobilizer wasn't throwing any hesitation on startup.

Total time on site was under an hour. He said the dealer had quoted him something that made him wince. He paid a fraction of that, never moved the Jeep, and went back inside to finish his coffee.

Jeep Patriot Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 2017 Jeep Patriot key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call anyone else. The dealer route on a remote head key like this one involves parts, labor, and sometimes a wait if they don't stock it. A mobile locksmith comes to you, usually carries the key, and handles cutting and programming in one visit. Buying a fob online to save money can work, but only if the factory FCC ID on the replacement matches the one on your original key exactly.
