She walked out of a restaurant near RB Town Center after a late dinner and her purse was gone. Grabbed right off the back of her chair. Keys, wallet, phone, all of it. She borrowed the hostess's phone, called the police, called her husband, then called me. She was an ER doctor. Not being able to move was not an option.
Her 2013 Jeep Patriot was sitting in a lot next door with no keys at all. Her husband had already called the dealer. They said they could order the parts, but the car would need to come in on a flatbed, and they were looking at three to five business days before she'd have keys in hand. They also flagged that the stolen key could still open her doors and start the vehicle.
That last part is the real issue with a theft situation. This isn't just making a spare. All-keys-lost after a theft means I wipe the key memory completely so the stolen fob is dead to that vehicle. Can't start it. Can't unlock it. Nothing. I got to the lot that night, connected my programmer to the OBD port, cleared every stored key from the immobilizer, and registered two new fobs from scratch. Cut both blades to the vehicle, tested all four buttons on each fob, tested both keys in the ignition. Everything working before the lot emptied out.
She drove home that night. The dealer comparison was almost an afterthought by the time we were done, but the husband mentioned it: days of waiting, a tow bill, and a quote that was a significant chunk more than what she paid me. The stolen key is worthless to whoever has it now.
