Standard blade, no buttons, no battery. The XJ runs a Texas 33 or ID44T transponder in the plastic head that handshakes with the SKIM module under the dash. WJ Grand Cherokee
The WJ kept the standard blade transponder but moved to an ID46 chip and started shipping a separate CR2032 remote fob around 2001. Programming still flows through OBD-II with the PIN code, so the van handles the entire pair on-site without any dealer ticket.
KK Liberty
Three buttons on the head, ID46 chip in the plastic, standard cut blade out the bottom, all one piece. SKIM is still calling the shots, which means OBD-II with a PIN. CR2032 keeps the remote breathing. Knock these out in under 30 minutes parked in a Mira Mesa or Carmel Mountain Ranch driveway.
KL (Modern Cherokee)
KL is where the math got hard. Proximity smart key, ID46 chip, high-security laser-cut blade, three buttons, push-button start. The RFID handshake runs through a Wireless Control Module, and FCA wants server authentication before any new fob talks to the truck. Marco runs that auth right off I-15, the tow truck stays parked.
Which Key Is in Your Cherokee Carry?
Solid metal blade with a thick plastic crown. Zero buttons, zero battery. The chip buried in that crown is the only reason your Cherokee starts.
Ignition key carries no buttons of its own. The lock and unlock remote is a separate plastic piece on the ring. Both halves have to be programmed to the same VIN.
Remote and key fused into one casting. Three buttons riding the top for lock, unlock, and trunk. Same crown you turn in the ignition.

SKIM Module Failure
Cherokee cranks but never catches, key icon strobing: SKIM cannot read the transponder. On 1998-2005 builds the module lives under the dash and fails on schedule. Marco tests in the driveway, swaps and reprograms same visit if needed.
Transponder Chip Wear
The transponder chip is a glass tube the size of a grain of rice, and years on a Cherokee keychain wear it down. Common on 1997-2010 trucks. When weak the SKIM stops recognizing it and your XJ or KK refuses to fire. Cut a new key, program fresh.
Proxy Alignment Needed
Before assuming the fob died on a 2014-2023 KL, Marco checks whether the BCM and Wireless Control Module fell out of sync. Battery disconnects, jumps, and module swaps trigger this. Not a bad key, just a handshake fault. Diagnostic kit realigns curbside.

XJ has no DIY path. The SKIM system demands a real OBD diagnostic platform like Autel or T-Code. Locksmith only.

KK has no key cycle trick either. Transponder registration runs through OBD only. No ignition dance on the planet will skip that step.
