I got a call out to Shadowridge on a Tuesday morning from a woman who works at a childcare center nearby. She had walked out to her 2021 Jeep Cherokee, pressed the door handle, and got nothing. No click, no unlock. She tried the start button inside, already inside from the passenger side, and the dash threw her a key-not-detected warning. The fob was in her hand the whole time.

I pulled up, asked her to hold the fob flat against the start button as a passive test. Nothing. That confirmed the fob was not transmitting at all, not just ranging low. I popped it open and the CR2032 inside looked original, dull on the surface, a little oxidation on one contact tab. Swapped it for a fresh cell, reseated it properly, and tried the door handle again.
It unlocked.
She stood there looking at it like she expected it to take it back.
The old battery still showed some voltage on a meter, which is exactly why these fool people. Voltage does not tell you whether the cell has enough amperage left to actually fire the fob's transmitter under load. It reads alive but performs dead.
She made it to work. I billed her for a service call and a battery. She mentioned the dealer had told her she would need a full fob replacement and would have to leave the car. That was not the case here, and she saved a good chunk.
