2006 Jeep Cherokee Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Over in Carlton Hills, a guy called me about his 2006 Jeep Cherokee. He said the key had been giving him grief for a couple of weeks. Some mornings it started fine. Other mornings the engine would catch and then die almost instantly, like it thought about it and changed its mind.
He had already tried the obvious stuff. Checked the battery under the hood, looked up the symptoms online, scared himself into thinking it was a fuel pump. The dealer gave him a number that made him pause long enough to look for another option. That is when he found me.
When I got there, the key slid in, the engine turned over, and then it died. Classic. That behavior points directly at the immobilizer not seeing the transponder chip properly. I checked the fob itself and the CR2032 inside was reading low on the tester. Weak enough that the remote buttons barely responded, and weak enough that chip communication on startup was getting inconsistent.
I replaced the battery, reseated everything inside the fob housing, and verified the chip was registering through my programmer before we even talked about anything else. Cranked it. Ran fine. Sat in the driveway idling while I walked him through what had been happening.
He mentioned he had a second key that he barely used. Good thing, because the battery in that one was just as old. We took care of that one too while I was there.
The dealer route would have meant an appointment, a day without his Jeep, and a bill that covered a lot more than what was actually wrong. One visit. Parking lot. Done.
