1997 Jeep Cherokee
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does a 1997 Jeep Cherokee actually use?

A standard metal key cut to your vehicle. No remote, no fob, no battery to replace. The 1997 Cherokee XJ uses a conventional edge-cut key that operates the ignition cylinder and door locks mechanically. You insert it, you turn it, the engine starts. That is the whole system. Replacement is a cutting job, not a programming job.

Q: How long does getting a replacement key take compared to going through a dealer?

For a 1997 Cherokee, dealer involvement is not really necessary, but the comparison still matters. Shops that do handle older Jeep keys sometimes require you to bring the vehicle in, which means arranging a tow if you have no working key at all. That alone can turn a simple problem into a half-day ordeal with a tow bill attached. When I come to you in Granite Hills, the job is typically done in one visit under thirty minutes.

Q: I have a 1997 Cherokee and the key turns but the ignition feels loose or sticky. Can you still cut me a new key?

Yes, but worth knowing: a worn ignition cylinder on an XJ can get to the point where even a correctly cut key does not turn cleanly. It is a known wear issue on high-mileage examples of this generation. If the cylinder is the problem, a new key cut to spec will still work better than a badly worn duplicate, but a severely worn cylinder may need attention separately.

Q: Can I just copy my existing Cherokee key at a hardware store?

You can, and for a daily driver duplicate it works fine. Hardware store copies are hit or miss on fit and finish, though. If your existing key is already a copy of a copy, the cut can drift just enough to cause problems in a worn cylinder. Getting a cut from the original key code or directly from the lock gives you the most accurate result.

1997 Jeep Cherokee Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy in Granite Hills on a Tuesday. His 1997 Cherokee XJ had been sitting in the driveway for a few days because he lost his only key somewhere on a trail run. No spare, no key code written down anywhere, and he was not about to pay for a tow just to get a key made.

I drove out to him. The Cherokee was right there in his driveway, so no flatbed needed. I decoded the lock cylinder, pulled the cut spec from that, and had a working replacement cut on site. He was turning it over before I even packed my tools back up.

He mentioned he had called around before reaching me. One shop told him he needed to bring the vehicle in. Another wanted to charge a separate trip fee on top of the key cost. He had already started looking at tow quotes before a friend pointed him toward me.

The whole thing took maybe twenty-five minutes once I was in front of the Jeep. Simple job, done where the truck lived. That is usually how these go with the XJ generation.

Jeep Cherokee Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Jeep dealer to get a replacement key for a 1997 Cherokee?▼

No. The 1997 Cherokee XJ predates the key systems that require dealer-only programming, so a mobile locksmith can handle this entirely in your driveway. The job is cutting a replacement key to fit your vehicle, either from your key code or by decoding one of your locks. No dealer appointment, no diagnostic port connection, no waiting for a tech with a specific software subscription.
