A guy over at Coronado Shores called me on a Saturday afternoon. He had a 1995 Jeep Cherokee parked in the lot near his building and the last key had snapped off in the door lock. Not in the ignition, in the door. The broken tip was still sitting in the cylinder.
He had already called a dealer. They told him to tow it in, said it would be a multi-day job, and the estimate was enough to give him pause.
I drove out to the lot. The first order of business was extracting the broken tip from the door cylinder without damaging the lock. Once that was out, I could read the cylinder and decode the cut. From the decode I cut a replacement key on the spot and tested it in the door, then the ignition.
It started on the first turn.
The whole thing happened in the parking lot while he waited. He said he figured it would take the rest of the weekend minimum. It took less than an hour. The dealer comparison barely came up because by the time he mentioned it, the Jeep was already running.
