I was parked off Torrey Pines Road when the call came in. A guy had driven down from LA for a morning trail run, left his only key in the cupholder, and shut the door on a 1996 Cherokee XJ that decided right then to lock itself. No spare at home, no fob, no remote entry of any kind. Just him, his trail shoes, and a locked Jeep sitting in the sun.

The Cherokee XJ is one of my favorite lockout calls. The door lock cylinder on these is accessible, and with the right tools I had him in without touching the paint. Then came the key question. He only ever had one key, had it for years, and wanted a spare made right there so this never happened again.
I decoded the existing key right off the lock cylinder and cut a fresh copy on my machine in the van. He stood there watching, which I actually prefer. No mystery, no waiting room, no "we'll call you when it's ready."
He made his trailhead. I was back on Torrey Pines Road before the marine layer burned off. The dealer would have needed the car dropped off, a day or more to cut a spare, and the tow he almost called for would have cost more than my whole bill.
