Saturday morning in Spring Valley, over near Dictionary Hill. A bakery owner had set up her booth at the farmers market, product out, customers already browsing, when she walked back to her 2020 Jeep Cherokee and got nothing. No unlock, no response from the door handles, and the push-button start just sat there looking at her. The dealer was closed. Monday felt like a different country.

First thing I did was test the fob before touching anything else. The CR2032 was dead, but swapping the battery alone wasn't going to finish the job. The fob had lost its pairing with the vehicle's security system, which happens when a key goes fully dark for long enough. A fresh battery brings the hardware back to life but doesn't re-establish that enrollment on its own.
I connected through the OBD port, pulled up the Cherokee's immobilizer, and re-enrolled her fob to the vehicle. Then I walked every function: lock, unlock, the liftgate button, and passive entry on both front handles. Everything confirmed clean.
She was back at her table in under an hour, and the Cherokee was waiting in the lot exactly where she left it when the market wrapped up. The dealer quote she got Monday, out of curiosity, was a lot more than what she paid me. That didn't surprise either of us.
