2001 Jeep Cherokee
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2001 Jeep Cherokee Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in 4S Ranch called me on a Tuesday morning. He had just bought a used 2001 Jeep Cherokee from a small lot in Rancho Bernardo. One key, no spare, and the lot told him getting a second one made would be simple. He went to the Jeep dealer first, because that seemed like the obvious move.

They gave him a number that made him pause. He found EZ Car Keyz online and asked if that price was normal. I told him it wasn't a scam, dealers do charge that much for this kind of key, but I could do the same thing for a fraction of what they wanted. He asked if I could meet him where he was. I told him that's the whole point.

I pulled up while he was still in the parking lot of the taco place off Bernardo Center Drive. He handed me his original key and I looked it over. The chip in the head was intact, which meant I could work from it directly. I matched the right blank, cut the blade to his vehicle using his original as a guide, and used my programmer to clone the transponder data from the original onto the new blank. The Jeep saw the new key exactly the way it sees the old one.

He tested it himself. Turned it over, engine started, no warning light, no stall. He sat there for a second like he was waiting for something to go wrong. Nothing did.

He left with two working keys. I mentioned that having a second enrolled key on hand matters more than people think. If one ever goes missing, adding a third from two existing keys is a much simpler job than starting from scratch with nothing in the ignition.
