Out near The Bridges in Rancho Santa Fe, I got a call about a 2002 Jeep Cherokee that would not start. The owner had a key, it turned in the ignition, the engine cranked fine, but it would die within a second or two every time. Classic sign of an immobilizer that does not recognize the transponder chip.

I transferred her existing chip into a new key head, re-seated it correctly, verified continuity, then cut a fresh key blade to her vehicle. After programming, she turned the key and it started and stayed running. That was it. The chip itself was fine the whole time. It just needed a proper home and a correct cut blade.
The dealer was going to replace the whole thing. We fixed what was actually broken, on her driveway, and she was driving again in under an hour.
