Out in Harbison Canyon, past where the road narrows and the lots get big, a ranch foreman ran a small avocado operation with a 2016 Jeep Cherokee as his daily work truck. The fob had been dropped, stepped on, and generally abused the way tools on a working property get abused. The case was cracked, one button pad was barely hanging on, and the vehicle had started doing something he described as "taking three tries to recognize me."

I drove out to him. The fob itself was the factory five-button unit, and the issue was partly physical. The cracked housing had let the battery contact shift, and the fob was intermittently losing connection. The vehicle's security system still had his original fob registered, so once I confirmed that, I transferred everything into a fresh shell, seated a new CR2032 correctly, and ran a full button and range test at the property gate.
Then we added a second key so he had a backup. That part takes longer than most people expect, because the system has to go through its enrollment sequence for each new unit. I did the whole job on the hood of my van while he kept an eye on an irrigation line.
Two working keys. Done before lunch. The dealer route would have cost him more and a full day he didn't have.
