How the Jeep Liberty Keys Changed Over the Years
KJ, 1st Generation
KJ is where Liberty security got serious. Jeep dropped the SKIM immobilizer with a transponder chip embedded in the key head. The blade turns like any other key, but if the chip never reaches SKIM, the engine never catches. Every program write flows through OBD-II, no shortcuts allowed.
KK, 2nd Gen Early
KK kept SKIM but added remote-head keys with lock, unlock, and panic riding on the head. The transponder still has to clear the immobilizer for the engine to fire, and the remote half runs on a CR2032. Programming still demands OBD-II access. No self-program path on any of these.
KK, 2nd Gen Late
Select late-KK trims jumped to push-button start with smart keys and flip keys plus rolling codes for the extra security layer. SKIM stayed, but programming now needs specialized diagnostic kit. Some of these need dealer-level equipment, and the van tells you upfront if yours is one of them.
Which Key Is in Your Liberty Carry?
Traditional metal blade with a transponder chip hidden in the plastic head. Looks like a regular key, but without that chip programmed your Liberty stays parked.
Blade and remote fused into one casting. Lock, unlock, and panic riding on the head. CR2032 keeps the remote half breathing.
Compact flip key with a folding blade and push-button start on select trims. CR2032 coin cell, rolling codes for the security handshake.
How Much Does a Jeep Liberty Key Cost? (San Diego)
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and testing, all done at your location.

Top Jeep Liberty Key Failures We See in 619
Transponder Chip Failure
Transponder chip in the key head wears down, especially on 2002-2010 builds. Key still turns, blade fits clean, but SKIM never sees a signal so the engine refuses to crank. Marco tests chip signal first. Dead chip means a fresh cut and program in the driveway.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Battery voltage is the first thing the van checks on a 2008-2012 fob. A weak CR2032 throws intermittent lock and unlock fails, and once it flatlines the rolling-code sync breaks. Fresh battery clears it. Lost sync? Marco reprograms through OBD-II in Mira Mesa.
Immobilizer Bypass Needed for Remote Start
Aftermarket remote start on a 2002-2007 Liberty cranks fine but never runs. SKIM looks for a transponder signal every time the engine fires. The fix is a 791 bypass module with an extra programmed key hidden inside the dash. Van handles the entire install.
Programming Tool Incompatibility
Not every locksmith can program every key. 2002-2007 transponder systems are picky and will not pair with generic tools lacking Chrysler software. The van carries Autel IM608 and Smart Pro with full Chrysler subscriptions, so the KJ gets programmed first time.
Can You Program a Jeep Liberty Key in San Diego?
No DIY path on these years. SKIM wants OBD-II programming with professional diagnostic equipment to sync the transponder chip to your ECU.
Same story. SKIM demands a PIN extraction and professional OBD-II gear. Chrysler never built a self-program procedure for the KK transponder.
Smart key plus push-button start on these trims demands specialized diagnostic tools to register the key with the body control module. Professional-only across the board.

Jeep Trivia Worth Knowing
The 2002 KJ Liberty was the first Jeep ever to ship with Chrysler's SKIM immobilizer and transponder keys standard across the entire lineup. Before the KJ, most Jeeps relied on plain mechanical ignition with zero electronic security. That single change cut theft rates dramatically and somehow kept the Liberty's off-road reputation perfectly intact.
