He called around 9pm from a diner parking lot in the Border Area of San Ysidro. His 2004 Jeep Liberty wouldn't start after his dinner break between shifts on a night security job. He turned the key, the engine cranked, caught for a second, then died. Tried it again. Same thing. He had one key, and that key looked fine.

I got to the lot and the first thing I did was look at his key under a light. The plastic head had a hairline crack running right through it. He hadn't dropped it recently that he could remember, but that kind of stress fracture happens slowly. The chip inside was damaged enough that the immobilizer wasn't reading it consistently. Sometimes it caught. Sometimes it didn't. That night, it had stopped catching entirely.
The blade was still good, so I used it to decode the cut, made a new key blade, transferred the programming to a new key head, and verified the immobilizer was communicating clean before I handed anything back. He turned the key and the Liberty started and held idle the way it should.
He sat there for a second before putting it in drive. Long night, but he made his post.
The dealer would have been an appointment the next day, a morning tow, and a wait. He needed it running that night. That's the whole reason I work mobile.
