Out near Flinn Springs, a guy had been doing a trail run in the hills east of Lakeside. Somewhere between the trailhead and the overlook pullout, his 2018 Jeep Renegade fob went missing. Could have been the pocket, could have been the pack. It was gone.
He called a locksmith closer to him first. That locksmith told him the ignition would need to be drilled and the cylinder replaced, and quoted him accordingly. He was skeptical, so he called me for a second opinion.
I drove out to the dirt pullout where the Renegade was sitting. Decoded the door lock by reading the wafers directly through the lock face, no damage, no drilling, cylinder stays exactly where it was. That gave me the cut depths I needed. I cut a fresh key blade, built the fob, and then worked through the gateway to get into the immobilizer and run the all-keys-lost sequence. Old fob erased from the system so it cannot start the vehicle if someone finds it on the trail. New fob enrolled, tested on all four buttons, passive entry handles checked on both sides.
The cylinder he was told needed replacing still works. The Renegade looks exactly like it did before I got there. He was back on the road in under an hour, for a fraction of what the other guy wanted just for parts and drilling.
The all-keys-lost part is what most people do not think about. If a fob disappears on a trail, you want that old fob wiped. That is not optional, that is the whole point.
