Out in the Mission San Luis Rey Area of Oceanside, I got a call from a guy who had driven his 2004 Wrangler to a morning appointment and come back to a key that would not start the truck. The engine would crank, catch for half a second, then die. He tried four or five times. Same result every time.
He figured it was a fuel problem. Already had a tow company in mind.
I asked him one question: did the key ever get wet, bent, or sit in the sun on a hot dashboard for a while. He went quiet for a second. He had a spare key he had kept in a cup holder for two years, baking under the California sun. He had been using that one daily for the past month after misplacing his original.
A transponder chip that has been heat-stressed long enough can start reading inconsistently. The immobilizer sees a signal it does not fully trust, allows a half-second of fuel, then shuts everything down. Looks like an engine problem. It is a key problem.
I cut a fresh replacement key blade to his vehicle and programmed a new transponder to his immobilizer on site. Tested it through four cold starts before I packed up. Took about 40 minutes total. He cancelled the tow.
The dealer was going to see him Thursday. It was Tuesday morning. He was parked in a lot off Mission Avenue and needed to be somewhere by noon. He made it.
