He called at 9pm from a diner parking lot in Downtown La Mesa. Night security shift, dinner break, and now his 2020 Jeep Wrangler wouldn't respond. Push-button did nothing. I pulled into the lot, connected my diagnostic equipment through the OBD port, and started reading the body control module. What came back made sense once I looked at the whole picture: the vehicle's battery was sitting at a borderline voltage, and during a voltage dip the module had dropped the fob from its key memory. The fob itself was fine. The key pairing had just fallen out after the module lost stable power long enough to reset that portion of its memory. This is a known failure mode on these vehicles when the main battery is aging, and it doesn't announce itself with a clear warning. The Jeep just stops recognizing the fob and sits there.
I stabilized the battery, then went through the immobilizer relearn to re-register his existing fob to the module. The Wrangler started on the first press.
He made his shift. The fob was never the problem, and a tow to the dealer would have cost him a night's work plus a wait. Diagnosis done in a parking lot, tools on hand, job closed before 10pm. That's the whole point of being mobile.
