Out near the Spring Valley border, not far from Lemon Grove, a farm foreman running an avocado property called me about a 2012 Wrangler that had become a single-key vehicle. The worn original still started the truck, barely, but the remote functions had been dead for months and the blade was so chewed up he was wiggling it in the ignition every time. He needed a backup and he needed the remote working again.
The nearest Jeep dealer was a real commitment from his property. Not a quick errand. He'd already called them and heard the words "appointment" and "tow it in" in the same sentence. That wasn't going to work during harvest when the Wrangler was moving around the property every day.
He found me and asked if I covered his area. I told him I'd come to him.
I pulled up to the grove and got the original key in hand. The fob shell was cracked, the blade was worn, and the battery contacts were corroded enough that the CR2032 was barely making connection. That explained the dead remote functions more than anything else. I cut a fresh key blade to match his vehicle, transferred the internals into a new fob shell with clean contacts and a new battery, then enrolled the replacement through the OBD port so the immobilizer recognized it.
He left with two working keys, both tested at the property gate, remote functions confirmed on both. The dealer route would have meant a tow or a long drive, a wait, and a bill that made him wince when he repeated it to me. Mobile service isn't a premium for customers out here. It's just the practical option.
